Open session notes

Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS) and autonomous platforms are transforming environmental data collection by enabling more precise and efficient observations. However, the growing use of these technologies brings new challenges for managing the data they produce. In this session, we introduce the Small Uncrewed Aircraft and Autonomous Platforms Data Working Group and present our recommendations for best practices in drone-derived data management. The guide spans the full data lifecycle—from mission planning and acquisition to processing, preservation, and publication—offering practical examples, links to external resources, and general principles. Beyond technical workflows, the recommendations address ethical considerations, including adherence to CARE principles, responsible handling of personal data, and safeguarding sensitive ecological information.

Session objectives include:

  • Introducing the Working Group and its scope
  • Presenting the recommendations and their rationale
  • Discussing mission planning and acquisition strategies
  • Reviewing data processing pipelines and interoperability standards
  • Exploring approaches for storage, sharing, and reuse
  • Identifying priorities for the community and future work

Group Activities and Scope

The sUAS Data WG and its associated Interest Group seek to be a forum for drone users to build appropriate drone data management practices, infrastructure and norms collaboratively and in partnership with academia, industry, regulators, and standards bodies.

Short Group Status

The working group was established in July 2024 while the associated IG was established in 2017. After almost 18 months, the group is finalising its representation and is expected to publish its deliverables by the beginning of January.

The working group has participated in RDA plenaries as follows:

  1. P22 Virtual Plenary (May 2024) Introducing the small uncrewed aircraft and autonomous platforms data Working Group
  2. P24 Virtual Plenary (May 2025) Advancing drone data management through better interoperability and awareness around ethics

P25  Brisbane (Oct. 2025, part of IDW) From ethics to interoperability: how to best collect and manage your drone data
