The adoption of open data practices by research communities increases opportunities for data reuse when the shared data products and services are disseminated in a usable state. Data repositories perform data reviews to assess the quality and usability of data that have been submitted for dissemination. Manual data review practices can be effective in ensuring the quality and usability of research data submitted to data repositories for dissemination. However, as the number of data submissions increase, data repositories need to meet increasing demands for conducting data reviews in a timely and effective manner.

Data review practices are quite diverse among  data repositories and many are exploring ways to address the challenges associated with reviewing proposed data products for release and subsequent use. The need to balance efficiency and effectiveness has been recognized as a particular challenge that repositories need to address. Following the discussion during our RDA P23 session, recommending further discussion on the improvement of data review practices at data repositories, the objectives of this session are to improve understanding on data review practices by exploring and discussing various approaches for attaining efficient data reviews while maintaining the effectiveness of the data review process. Expected outcomes of the session include recognition of the variety of approaches that data repositories are employing to pursue efficiencies in conducting data reviews while maintaining the integrity of the data review process as well as increased understanding of the ways to explore implementation of such approaches.
