RDA Spain @ Ibergrid

The RDA Spanish node celebrated the 2019 national meeting on September 23rd 2019 in Santiago de Compostela, co-located with the EOSC Synergy Kick-Off event at the Ibergrid 2019 Conference.

The 10th Iberian Grid Conference took place in Santiago de Compostela from 23-26 September 2019 hosted by the Centro de Supercomputación de Galicia (CESGA). Ibergrid 2019 covered topics related to fostering the development, integration, and adoption of services to support cutting-edge research projects.

Invited speakers from the RDA community to this event were:

  • Hilary Hanahoe (RDA), RDA Secretary General
  • Carlos Parra Calderón (Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío), FAIR4Health project
  • Mohammad Akhlaghi (Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias - IAC), RDA Adoption Grant for the “Template for reproducible, shareable and achievable data analysis”
  • Diego Lopez de Ipiña Gonzalez de Artaza (Universidad de Deusto), European Data Incubator (EDI) project

The RDA session and participation in the e-Infrastructure plenary moderated by Antonio Jesús Sánchez Padial (Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities) focused on presenting the RDA global initiative and the national node to the Spanish Data Science community. Approximately 80 people attended the event. The audience included researchers working with HPC technologies, technicians, project coordinators as well as representatives from the the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

Hilary Hanahoe, RDA Secretary General, opened the plenary session presenting RDA Global and European perspectives highlighting the RDA user benefits and the RDA plenary in Helsinki (October 23-25, 2019).

Tamara Kovazh, RDA Spain Node Manager (BSC), reviewed the current status of the Spanish node, highlighting its missions, achievements and the synergies with other H2020 projects and EOSC initiatives.

Carlos Parra, Virgen del Rocio University Hospital Sevilla, presented the FAIR4health project exploring how the FAIR principles can be used in the real context of health data and aiming to facilitate and encourage the EU health research community to “fairify” the share and reuse of datasets derived from publicly funded research initiatives. With RDA forming part of the outreach strategy (Health Data IG and Reproducible Health Data Services WG), a workshop addressing these issues will be organized at the next RDA plenary.

Diego Lopez de Ipiña, Deusto University, introduced the European Data Incubator (EDI) Project which funds efforts of 100 companies in Europe with 5 Million Euros to create solutions for data problems, helping SMEs and start-ups interested in applying big data open source tools to sort out major tech challenges.

Mohammad Akhlaghi, Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics (IAC), presented his work on the template for reproducible data analysis and scientific research, for which he received the RDA Europe Adoption grant.

The session was concluded by a social lunch sponsored by the RDA Spanish node, which allowed an intense networking activity and follow up discussions from the previous formal session.

As a consequence of the second RDA Spanish national event, many more Spanish scientists are now part of the RDA global international network.

Presentations are available on the Conference website.
