Open session notes

The Persistent Identification of Instruments Working Group formulated the PIDINST metadata schema for the identification and description of instruments. This schema is formulated in a technology agnostic way, just defining the attributes of the instrument to be considered.
Now, more and more applications that deal with scientific metadata make use of schema.org. So naturally, the question arises, how to represent an instrument description in schema.org, based on the PIDINST schema? A related question is how to establish the link from a description of a dataset expressed in schema.org to the instrument that collected the data? It turns out that both are not straightforward to answer. Very different approaches are used in the community. Some standardization seems to be badly needed.
The RDA Persistent Identification of Instruments Working Group is asked to come up with a recommendation. In this session we want to present and discuss different approaches.

Meeting presenters

Rolf Krahl (Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie), Stephen Richard (US Geoscience Information Network), Lucas Lamparter (Forschungszentrum Jülich), Renaud Duyme (ESRF)

Meeting agenda

  1. Welcome and Intro – Rolf Krahl (5 min.)
  2. Contributions: how to describe instruments and how to link datasets to instruments using schema.org?
    1. Representing instruments in the Cross-Domain Interoperability Framework (CDIF) – Stephen Richard (10 min.)
    2. Instruments in the Helmholtz Knowledge Graph – Lucas Lamparter (10 min.)
    3. Using schema.org with PIDINST – Renaud Duyme (10 min.)
  3. Discussion – all (45 min.)
  4. Conclusion: are we able to give a recommendation? – all (10 min.)

Target audience

  • Managers of scientific instruments that want to represent their instrument description in schema.org
  • Data managers that want to link datasets with the instrument that collected the data
  • Data managers that want to include scientific instruments in a knowledge graph

Group Activities and Scope

The Persistent Identification of Instruments Working Group seeks to explore a community-driven solution for globally unique identification of measuring instruments operated in the sciences. It formulated a metadata schema for the description of instruments that is supposed to be registered with the PID record and explored options with PID infrastructure providers to register PIDs for instruments.

Short Group Status

The Persistent Identification of Instruments WG kicked off at RDA P11 in March 2018 and concluded its formal 18 month term at RDA P14 in October 2019. An overview on the outcomes is provided on a dedicated web site. It is in “maintenance mode” now, but still active and has regular meetings, maintaining its outputs and supporting adoption. We occasionally hosted sessions at Plenaries since then (P16, P17, P19, P20, P24 & P25).
