This meeting continues the work of the re-activated National Data Services (NDS) IG. It will start work on two objectives:

  1. Ratify the scope of what is meant by national data services. The meeting held at P24 agreed that a definition of NDS was desirable, but there were a number of unresolved issues around the breadth of the scope, and what dimensions to use. The GORC commons dimensions were suggested as a useful starting point. A definition will be provided before the meeting.
  2. Build on and test joint opportunities with the GORC IG and GORC II WG. Existing NDS are examples of different services that have been designed to meet the needs of specific user communities. The idea of creating an NDS profile of the GORC International Model was suggested as one path forward at the P24 meeting. Perhaps this work could start with a generic profile, and then move to specific profiles for a number of different NDSs.

This session builds on previous BOF sessions at P22 and P23, which determined that there is an interest to restart the RDA National Data Services IG, as well as the re-activation session with a new Statement of Work at P24. Three co-chairs are now in place, intentionally representing Australia, Europe, and North America.

The Statement of Work identifies a forum for exchange as one central objective in the much evolved landscape of NDS since the end of the previous group. It also recognizes the GORC IM as a promising framework for structuring the work of the IG.

70 – 90: Discussion and next steps, including which other NDSs to target, contact points, points of collaboration with umbrella groups. Summarize the Actions/Takeaways.

Target audience

Providers of national data services or those planning to do so, researchers engaging with national data services, and everyone interested in the topic.

Group Activities and Scope

The IG’s initial objectives are to arrive at and consolidate a common understanding of the scope of national data services and serve as a forum for exchange on best practice. A second strand of activities relates to the Global Open Research Commons (GORC). The IG aims to create an implementation profile for NDS in the GORC IM and, in the process, potentially to improve the GORC IM with elements gathered through the profile process. Based on the above activities the IG will consider an output on “The Value of RDA for National Data Services”.
