Multi-Omics Metadata Standards Integration (MOMSI) WG
Background
Multi-omics data integration merges multiple Omics data types (e.g., genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, phenomics, etc.) leveraging a wide range of high-throughput technologies (sequencing, mass spectrometry, imaging, etc.) for quantification and characterization of large complex pools of biological molecules. Multi-omics data integration and analysis provides a closer look into the complex structural and functional interactions at the molecular level for improving our understanding of biological dynamics of living organism(s) across the life science landscape.
As significant advancements in Omics instrument technologies continue to evolve as does the volume of subject matter expert experimental methodologies. As a result, there has been an unprecedented increase in the generation and storage of multi-omics data over the past decade. Despite many challenges remain regarding multi-omics data management and sharing for reuse of complex Omics datasets (Figure 1).

A persistent challenge is the vast array of fragmented experimental metadata and data formats generated across the different Omics domains, making it difficult to manage and integrate multi-omics data prior to downstream analyses.

1. Omics Landscape Review and Evaluation of Existing Community Standards – Explore Deliverable 1a (Continuous Curation) ✅📮
The MOMSI WG Landscape Review Dashboard is both a community-driven curation workflow repository and interactive web-based dashboard tool. Explore >250 standards containing various Multi-omics domain (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, etc.) and universal (generalist and subject agnostic) standards curated by the MOMSI WG. Curated standards include controlled vocabularies/ontologies, metadata reporting guidelines, data models/formats, and identifier schemas relevant to Omics application technologies and FAIR best practices. The MOMSI WG Landscape Review Dashboard is designed to support continuous curation of Omics domain and generalist community-accepted standards in real time aiding next-generation Multi-Omics data integration platform system developments, refinements, and new implementations. 2. Multi-Omics Standards Collection at FAIRsharing – Explore Deliverable 1b (Advanced Search & Filtered Selection) 🛠️
Leveraging and building upon existing resource records at FAIRsharing (in collaboration with the FAIRsharing Registry RDA WG), the MOMSI WG Collection (Deliverable 1b) provides a live recommended list of expert-reviewed domain and generalist standards aimed at enhancing “state-of-the-art” developments in Multi-omics data harmonization and integration. Standards included in this collection focus on Omics relevant terminologies, metadata reporting guidelines, data models/formats, and identifier schemas. New and existing standards listed in this collection have undergone an iterative in-depth landscape review process using the MOMSI curation dashboard sustainability workflow located at our MOMSI GitHub repository (Deliverable 1a). This process involves evaluating the accuracy and completeness of each standard and the minimal information criteria required for curation prior to addition to this collection. Our collection seeks to benefit and encourage continuous, open, and expert-driven curation of machine-actionable Multi-omics community standards. This collection is designed to support continuous Multi-omics community standard curation in keeping pace with evolving research data management tasks, roles, and research data sharing best practices.

3. Multi-Omics Standards Integration Gap Analysis (Deliverable 2a) – Upcoming 👀
There are currently many well-established and well-developed Omics standards, but knowing intuitively or immediately which standards are complementary across domains is not obvious. Leveraging the work from previous deliverables, this WG will provide a gap analysis that will identify common data standards and metadata reporting guidelines implemented across Omics domains to link complementary integration points. This activity aims to support common metadata elements outlined in our resulting FAIRsharing standards collection for downstream data integration endeavors. This analysis will highlight current domain metadata standard reporting gaps and reveal new synergistic collaborations for Multi-omics standard community implementation developments where applicable.
4. Multi-omics FAIRsharing Database Use-case Collection (Deliverable 2b) – Pending
MOMSI Multi-omics data and metadata integration use-case records at FAIRsharing, identified during the gap analysis, to be included in as a new “Collection” consisting of multi-omics databases, repositories, and/or knowledgebases implementing >2 different Omics domain data standard types from >1 application technology identified as key nodes of integration by the MOMSI WG.

The MOMSI WG are continually seeking diverse membership, representative of different countries and continents, with expertise in Omics application technologies areas of mass spectrometry and sequencing.
