FAIRification processes—achieving FAIR digital assets and services in the life sciences and beyond

This meeting will showcase approaches to adopting and implementing the FAIR data principles that either have been explicitly designed to apply across a wide range of communities or have shown promise to generalise across disciplines within and beyond the biomolecular life sciences. The examples will inform a discussion with the wider RDA community to identify opportunities for future work and collaborations with an emphasis on practical guidance on how to design and implement processes to support FAIR data management practices. The outcome of the meeting will be a short report that briefly covers each of the approaches presented and opportunities for future collaborations, all participants will be invited to contribute.

  • Welcome to the session (10 min)
    Format:Brief introduction to the group and this session followed by an interactive icebreaker to the topic where all participants are invited to interact.

    Format: Joint presentation by life science data infrastructures in Africa and Europe followed by Q&A

  • FAIR-enabling products, processes and practices: What are promising approaches? (30 min)
    Format: Four coordinated flash talks by invited speakers covering approaches from other disciplines followed by Q&A

  • Opportunities for future collaborations and alignment? (30 min)

Target audience

The primary audience is new and experienced RDA members who are interested in the development of products, processes and practices that support FAIR data management in data infrastructures. But the meeting is open to anyone who would like to get an overview of the topic and applications of the FAIR principles.

Group Activities and Scope

The Life Science Data Infrastructures Interest Group (IG) was formed to serve as a bridge between life science data infrastructures in different regions of the world and relevant RDA Interest and Working Groups, including both specific subtopics of the life sciences, as well as generic topics that can/should be applied in the life sciences such as big data analysis, federated identity management, and data publishing.

The IG aspires to have meaningful representation from diverse geographical regions including North and South America, Europe; Africa, Asia and Oceania; and will actively seek participation from under-represented groups and the global South. The IG also aims for fair gender representation and inclusivity in all its activities.

The group has so far focused its activities on preparing Group sessions and Joint group sessions at the RDA plenaries that have served as fora for exchange across the life science data infrastructure community and the RDA. All the chairs of the IG are actively involved on a day to day basis to influence or deploy best practice national scale data infrastructure to support life science research in their respective regions.

Short Group Status

The Charter for this group was approved by the TAB in May 2022. The group met for the first time at the 19th RDA Plenary in June 2022 to introduce the aims of the group, and at the following plenaries in 2023 (20th and 21st) were focused towards exploring the implementation and interpretation of the FAIR principles in digital asset management challenges that life science data infrastructures are working to solve on behalf of their user communities.

In 2024 (22nd plenary) the group explored the FAIR requirements for federated infrastructures and identified a number of shared interests across the life science data infrastructures community and the RDA. At this plenary the group is continuing its exploration into practical implication and applications of the FAIR principles within data infrastructures, this time focusing on products, processes and practices that can inform activities aimed at in achieving FAIR digital assets and services.
