The I-ADOPT Working Group was set up to address the lack of a common framework to enable interoperability between diverse terminologies used to represent observable properties and to provide the necessary level of detail needed for seamless data discovery and integration. The Working Group is in maintenance mode, curating and refining the I-ADOPT Framework and the endorsed Recommendations published in 2022. The framework is a set of guidelines based on a simple non-domain specific ontology that supports decomposing complex observable properties into their essential atomic parts defined as concepts in FAIR terminologies. At the last session during P22, we reviewed current efforts in applying the I-ADOPT ontology to existing terminologies and creating mappings. Specifically, we discussed incorporation with SSN/SOSA, occurrence cubes, and scientific knowledge graphs, and mappings for EML and OBOE. We also identified opportunities to collaborate with OGC/W3C and the FAIR mappings working group currently being proposed. As part of this process, the next step is to evaluate the interoperability aspect of the Framework by comparing these implementations, and testing its alignment with established conceptual frameworks, and ensuring that the use of I-ADOPT does indeed facilitate interoperability between data sources. One of the main initiatives towards this end is the I-ADOPT Variable Modeling Challenge to take in place in September 2024 (more details can be found here: https://i-adopt.github.io/challenge.html).

The group was officially launched in 2019 and completed its 18-month workplan in 2021. Its final recommendations were published in May 2022. It remains active and is now in maintenance mode. The group continues to meet every month to discuss implementation scenarios, extensions to the framework, connections with other related initiatives, and the design of an I-ADOPT based annotation service.
