Subject: Data Ethics and Human Rights in the Platform Economy
    Dear colleagues
The African Association of Universities (a University Association counting over 400 Universities across the African Continent), the University of Nottingham and the Ethical Data Initiative launched the Campaign for Data Ethics in Education. The inaugural event in the Ethical Data Discussion Series looked atData Ethics Policy in Higher Education and launched ourData Ethics in Higher Education campaign.
Data Ethics Policy in Higher Education was the first in the ongoing Ethical Data Discussion series, which aims to explore important topics and questions surrounding digital technology, data collection and data-driven research; highlighting the need for training digital practitioners in the ethics of their craft.
The next webinar in the Ethical Data Discussions Series:Data Ethics and Human Rights in the Platform Economywill take place on Tuesday 20 June, 2023 at 09:00 GMT (10:00 UK time).
Together with a panel of human rights, data science and international development experts – and using the UN Declaration of Human Rights as a starting point – we will discuss what has already been done to identify and mitigate potential harms inherent in data collection and research, where the legislative gaps currently exist, and what we can do to protect research subjects in our own work.
We look forward to some thought-provoking discussions with a range of experts and other key stakeholders, with a view to co-developing pathways to include data ethics as standard in data science education and research worldwide.
    – With the rise of the platform economy, what would you say are the main human rights issues in the digital age and why?

How are basic human rights (as defined by the UN Declaration on Human Rights) embedded into current data legislation? Is there more to do?
    – What are the ethical implications of surveillance capitalism?  For example , automated tools being used to monitor and manage workers?

What can researchers and data professionals do concretely to respect the rights of test subjects/ those whose data they are collecting?

With the recent interest in AI in the media, what do you see as the main issues and how do you think that this might impact human rights?

With the increase in data intensive research, and focus on data law and ethics in general, do you think it is time that data ethics should become an integral part of the education curriculum in schools and universities? Why?
