The goal of the Earth, Space and Environmental Sciences Interest Group (ESES-IG) is to work towards coordinating and harmonising multiple international efforts, both in interdisciplinary and domain-specific FAIR data infrastructure development, vocabularies, and common data/digital services. Through open communication, the ESES-IG seeks to reduce possible duplication, increase efficiency, share use cases, and promote partnerships and adoption in the global community. 

The objectives of the session include:

• Continue mapping the landscape of Earth, space and environmental data infrastructures and vocabulary resources: further refinement of the ESES-IG catalogues;

• Showcasing new projects; and

• Reviewing two maturing projects (PARSEC, ENVRI-FAIR): what can we learn from them?

• 0-5 Minutes (5 minutes): Introduction (Lesley Wyborn, ANU)

• 5-15 Minutes (5 minutes); Review the current status of our two key ESES IG supporting outputs. Both of these are crowd-sourced: please contribute if you have, or you know of any resources, that could be added to either (Lesley Wyborn).

  1. The Data Infrastructure Catalogue which contains list of groups working within ESES, and those that include ESES as part of cross domain infrastructure initiatives; and

  2. The Semantic Resources Catalogue which contains lists of vocabulary/ ontology repositories, cross domain vocabulary infrastructures, activities creating and aggregating semantic assets.
      

• 10-35 Minutes (25 minutes): a set of lighting presentations (3 minutes each) on new developments in Earth and Environmental Science Data Infrastructures as follows:

  6. ESES-IG Working Group on Earth, Space, and Environmental Science Complex Citation – Case Statement (Martina Stockhause, German Climate Centre)

  7. Proposed Working Group on Coordinating ESES Data Preservation and Scholarly Publication Processes – Draft Case Statement Danie Kinkade, WHOI)

• 35-85 Minutes (50 minutes): two Deep Dives on two mature projects that have been building interdisciplinary data sharing frameworks and are nearing completion.

  1. PARSEC (Building New Tools for Data Sharing and Re-use through a Transnational Investigation of the Socioeconomic Impacts of Protected Areas) (Alison Specht, University of Queensland)

  2. ENVRI-FAIR  A Multidisciplinary System for Environmental Research (Keith Jeffery, UKRI/BGS and Helen Glaves, BGS)

         Each project will discuss:

1. What key data sharing infrastructures were developed by these two maturing projects?

2. What were the key success factors in these projects?

3. Is there unfinished work that could be pursued in other, future projects?

85-90 Minutes (5 minutes): Wrap up and next steps (Lesley Wyborn, ANU).

Our target audience includes participants and their organisations associated with ESES research projects and efforts, as well as users of ESES datasets in other domains anywhere in the world. We particularly welcome participants from Africa, Asia, South America and any other members of the Global South.
