The goal of the Earth, Space and Environmental Sciences Interest Group (ESES-IG) is to work towards coordinating and harmonising multiple international efforts, both in interdisciplinary and domain-specific FAIR data infrastructure development, vocabularies, and common data/digital services. Through open communication, the ESES-IG seeks to reduce possible duplication, increase efficiency, share use cases, and promote partnerships and adoption in the global community. 

The objectives of the session include:

• Continue mapping the landscape of Earth, space and environmental data infrastructures and vocabulary resources: further refinement of the ESES-IG catalogues;

• Showcasing recent achievements and projects; 

• Exploring the status of ESES Domain Repositories Data Repositories globally – which ones comply with FAIR, CARE and TRUST principles?

• 0-5 Minutes (5 minutes): Introduction 

• 5-15 Minutes (10 minutes); Review the current status of our two key ESES IG supporting catalogues. Both of these are crowd-sourced: please contribute if you have, or you know of any resources, that could be added to either.

  1. The Data Infrastructure Catalogue which contains list of groups working within ESES, and those that include ESES as part of cross domain infrastructure initiatives; and

  2. The Semantic Resources Catalogue which contains lists of vocabulary/ ontology repositories, cross domain vocabulary infrastructures, activities creating and aggregating semantic assets.
      

• 15-35 Minutes (20 minutes): a set of lighting presentations (5 minutes each) on new achievements/developments in Earth and Environmental Science Data Infrastructures. Potential presentations include:

  1. Your Journey towards Open Science in 5 Languages: Pedro Corrêa (Universidade de Sao Paulo, Brazil)

  2. The proposed ESES Community of Practice – Shelley Stall (AGU)

  3. Proposed Working Group on Coordinating ESES Data Preservation and Scholarly Publication Processes (Danie Kinkade) – Case Statement Danie Kinkade (WHOI)

  4. Space for contributions from the audience.

• 35-45 MInutes (10 Minutes) Introducing the Geo-INQUIRE project (Otto Lange, Uttrecht University).

• 45-85 Minutes (40 minutes): Group discussion and exploration of the Status of Discipline-specific repositories in the Earth, Space and Environmental Sciences (ESES) Internationally – which ones are compliant with the FAIR, CARE and TRUST principles?  Several topics will then be explored including:

  1. What are the drivers for ESES-specific repositories?

  2. What is out there?

     • Do we know many ESES-specific repositories there are?

     • Reviewing lists of existing repositories including:

       • Re3Data (generic list but can be searched for ESES ones)

       • Domain-Discipline Repositories Useful to AGU Journals

       • Are there any other lists out there that can help find ESES repositories?

     • Do these lists provide enough information for an ESES researcher to make an informed decision? 

  3. What are the advantages of these over generic/institutional repositories?

     • What level of curation do they offer over generic/institutional repositories?

     • How many have CoreTrustSeal certification?

     • How many are compliant with the FAIR, CARE and TRUST principles?

• 85-90 Minutes (5 minutes): Wrap up and next steps.

Our target audience includes participants and their organisations associated with ESES research projects and efforts, as well as users of ESES datasets in other domains anywhere in the world. We particularly welcome participants from Africa, Asia, South America and any other members of the Global South.
