This session will offer an overview of the current landscape of RDM training, exploring how it has evolved to meet the shifting needs of diverse research communities. We will assess the effectiveness of current approaches and examine their impact on different audiences, from students and PhD students to data stewards, support staff and indigenous/community-driven research through a combination of presentations, interactive discussions, and knowledge-sharing.

The session will examine:

  • How RDM training adapts across disciplines and regions, in response to institutional priorities, policy shifts, and evolving researcher needs
  • Innovative and inclusive training approaches, including gamification, embedded learning, peer-to-peer models, and AI-supported tools
  • Long-term capacity building, with a focus on sustainability, securing funding, and creating space for community-led and culturally respectful training

Key discussions will focus on removing barriers to research data access, building equitable and sustainable training programmes, and identifying the support structures needed for long-term success.

We will also explore the integration of AI in RDM training, highlighting its potential to transform learning and the ethical considerations it raises. By considering the needs of various stakeholders and communities, this session aims to identify practical and effective training strategies, as well as sustainable approaches that empower researchers and foster open, responsible research practices. The insights gathered will help shape future directions for inclusive and impactful RDM capacity building.

Meeting agenda

Beginning with an introduction to the ETHRD-IG, this session will emphasize the critical role of Research Data Management (RDM) education in today’s academic and research environment. We will explore the evolution of RDM training to address the shifting needs of diverse research communities.

We invite the community to share their experiences in delivering RDM training, highlighting both good practices and challenges.

By bringing together diverse perspectives, this session aims to identify effective training strategies and sustainable approaches that empower communities and foster open, responsible research practices.

Group Activities and Scope

The ETHRD-IG provides a venue for exchanging information about existing developments and initiatives related to education and training on research data handling. Providing necessary education and training is critical to uncovering the benefits of worldwide Open Data activities, realising the potential of data-driven research, and increasing the efficiency and impact of all modes of research, to ultimately improve our world.

In this session, we will build upon the IG’s past work to continue working within the current context of the data professional education environment and contribute to the IG’s work in ways that will benefit existing initiatives and uncover new initiatives ripe for synergistic contributions. The goal is to address data science and research data handling education and training by facilitating information exchange and cooperation between efforts worldwide supporting the education of data professionals and training of those handling research data.

Short Group Status

The ETHRD-IG is a well-established recognised group of long standing, having started in 2013. Through this time we have remained a populous group with a variety of interests, supporting work in multiple areas across a wide community, counting more than 300 members. The IG is a central venue at RDA to exchange and coordinate numerous training activities at RDA and associated European, US and worldwide projects on data related skills development and curricula development. We remain an open group, welcome to new-comers and old-timers, as the work of education and training is never done.
