Research data repositories need to conduct data reviews regularly to enable use of their data holdings by the designated communities of users. Challenges for conducting data reviews include establishing policies to ensure that data reviews are conducted routinely and effectively while reducing the demands on volunteer data reviewers and the costs of reviewing research data. Data reviewers also need to be recognized and rewarded appropriately for their contributions to improve the quality of the repository’s data holdings. Adopting sound policies, semi-automation and automation of data review workflows offer opportunities for meeting such challenges and objectives. In this joint session, presenters and community members discuss approaches for improving the policies and practices for data repositories to conduct data reviews.

Group Activities and Scope

The RDA Domain Repositories IG and the RDA Repository Platforms for Research Data (RPRD) IG  are collaborating to improve the capabilities of data repositories to serve their user communities. The RDA Domain Repositories IG focuses on enhancing communication with other RDA groups and on representing the interests of domain repositories in those groups. The RPRD IG focuses on improving the usability and technical capabilities of research data repository platforms. Together, the Domain Repositories IG and the RPRD IG share interests in identifying opportunities for data repositories to improve capabilities for using data and conducting research. The planned joint session will explore ways for data repositories to improve policies and workflow practices for the review of data products that have been submitted for dissemination.

Short Group Status

The Domain Repositories IG and the Repository Platforms for Research Data (RPRD) Interest Group (IG) have both been quite active for several years and have found that the RDA community is very interested in improving the capabilities of research data repositories. In addition to activities completed by each IG independently, the Domain Repositories IG and the RPRD IG convened joint sessions for RDA P17 and RDA P18 on collaboration and cooperation among repositories and during RDA P19 on Sharing Knowledge across Disciplines that were very well attended by the RDA community. These IGs also convened a joint session during P21 in Salzburg on discovering unpublished and diverse data usage and impact that was very well attended due to community interest. During their joint RDA P22,  RDA P23, and RDA P24 sessions on data review issues, participants recommended convening a follow-up joint RDA P25 session to further discuss challenges and opportunities for improving data review practices.
