Implementing and Facilitating Data Review in Data Repositories

Meeting objectives

Review of research data is necessary to ensure that open data are of sufficient quality to enable their reuse in subsequent studies. As stewards and disseminators of research data and research-related information, data repositories conduct reviews of the data that they manage so that their user community will be able to access quality data and understand whether the data are appropriate for use and, if so, how they might be reused for a planned study. Conducting data reviews contributes to the value of data and enables sharing of first-class research outputs. Results of the data review process also offer opportunities for repositories to develop enhancements to products and services that provide users with new capabilities.
The data review process can range from automated reviews to external peer reviews conducted by experts in the methods and instruments used in data production. Repositories face various challenges when establishing and managing the data review process. Among other provisions, repositories need to establish review criteria and processes, recruit expert reviewers, implement review systems, and motivate and reward reviewers. Building on our RDA P22 session, objectives of the session on data review include improving understanding of the various challenges for establishing and managing data review processes and how they are being addressed at repositories and identifying ways to enhance data review processes that attain efficiency and time reduction, while reducing reviewer fatigue and improving opportunities for recruiting and recognizing data reviewers. Outcomes of the session include improved understanding of data review challenges and solutions as well as attaining practical approaches to reducing the duration of the time required to complete data reviews.

Group Activities and Scope

The RDA Repository Platforms for Research Data (RPRD) IG and the RDA Domain Repositories IG are collaborating to improve the capabilities of data repositories to serve their user communities. The RPRD IG focuses on improving the usability and technical capabilities of research data repository platforms. The RDA Domain Repositories IG focuses on enhancing communication with other RDA groups and on representing the interests of domain repositories in those groups. Together, the RPRD IG and the Domain Repositories IG share interests in identifying opportunities for data repositories to improve capabilities for using data and conducting research. The planned joint session will explore ways for data repositories to implement and facilitate the review of data products that have been submitted for dissemination.

Short Group Status

The Repository Platforms for Research Data (RPRD) Interest Group (IG) and the Domain Repositories IG have both been quite active and have found that the RDA community is very interested in improving the capabilities of research data repositories. In addition to activities completed by each IG independently, the RPRD IG and the Domain Repositories IG convened joint sessions for RDA P17 and RDA P18 on collaboration and cooperation among repositories and during RDA P19 on Sharing Knowledge across Disciplines that were very well attended by the RDA community. More recently, these IGs convened a joint session during P21 in Salzburg on discovering unpublished and diverse data usage and impact that also was very well attended due to community interest. During their joint RDA P22 session on data review, participants recommended convening a follow-up joint RDA P23 session to further discuss data review.
