The Data Director Agentic AI Blueprint Working Group is a time-bound, eight-week initiative convened by the Research Data Alliance (RDA) in collaboration with Microsoft to develop an open, technology-agnostic blueprint for an agentic AI tool designed to support researchers in preparing and sharing data in compliance with FAIR principles.
The Working Group is derived from a global community consultation conducted in November 2025, which identified the Data Director as a top-three priority agentic AI tool across regional and stakeholder groups worldwide. As the tool most closely aligned with the RDA’s mission, vision, and guiding principles, it was selected as the focus for the next phase of community-driven development.
Over eight weeks (April to June 2026), the Working Group will bring together researchers, data professionals, infrastructure providers, technology developers, and policymakers from across the global research community to produce the Data Director Blueprint v0.1. This will be a detailed, community-driven specification, encompassing problem definition, architecture principles, functional requirements, input and output standards, and a governance model, comprehensive enough for research institutions, national research infrastructures, and commercial vendors to use as the basis for real-world implementation.
The programme is open to all. Upon completion, the Blueprint will be openly published and made freely available to the global research community, with a formal review and comment period to inform the development of the final version
