** Apologies for any cross-posting but members of this list might be interested in the two new research challenges from Jisc, in particular the Next Generation Research Environments **
Jisc is launching a consultation to find the next big ideas for technology in education and research. We recently released a set of visions for how technology will transform research and education by 2020-2030. Since their release we have been rationalising our research and development portfolio to focus on delivering those visions. As a result the majority of our effort is focused on 3 big areas: Digital capability, Analytics and the Research data management shared service.
However, we also need to devote a small amount of effort to thinking about what could be the next big ideas we want to focus on once the current big 3 are delivered. We have identified 6 challenges from the visions, which we think pose interesting opportunities for our members and we want to find out which of these challenges is most popular with the community and what they think Jisc should be tackling.
You may be interested to hear that two of the challenges are focussed on research – Skills for Research and Next Generation Research Environments. The challenges launched on Monday 31 October and are being publicised via the Jisc website and the Research Data blog. Between 31 October and 24 November we are encouraging discussion around these two challenges and looking to engage as many people as possible during this time.
It’s not enough for us to say what the sector will most value, so I’m hoping that members of this list will provide valuable feedback on both challenges and be willing to raise awareness during the campaign (for example, by joining in a tweetchat (see the blog for dates), tweeting about the discussion, mentioning it to colleagues who may be interested or even blogging about it). Your feedback is important as, at the end of the campaign, we will be collating responses and prioritising ideas, prior to announcing the successful ideas on 30 January.
You can read about each of the two research challenges here: Skills for Research and Research Environments. Please provide feedback by adding comments to these documents during the campaign. A supporting post is on the Research Data blog where comments can be posted.
The Next Generation Research Environments challenge is led by myself (Christopher Brown) and Skills for Research is led by Caroline Ingram. We’d be happy to discuss the challenges and campaign in more detail. You can contact us direct or via the following email addresses: ***@***.*** and ***@***.***.
Please read the challenges and provide your feedback. We’re looking forward to hearing what you have to say and will be collating feedback weekly via the blog.
    Regards,
    Christopher
