Provenance Sessions at AGU

Dear RDA Provenance Interest Group and Australian Provenance Group
I would like to draw your attention to 3 sessions at AGU that are dealing with Provenance. Abstracts are due on 2 August.
They are:
1) IN046: Open Data and Research Integrity: Data and Software Citation, Provenance, Rigor, and Repositories
Session Description:
Research integrity, reproducibility, and future scientific discoveries depend on our current science (data, methods, software) being discoverable, transparent, and well understood. Many researchers use publications to identify datasets that would be useful in new research. Publishers have traditionally allowed data to be included in supplements, with no requirement for data citation, proper provenance or preservation in a repository. While this has been changing recently, there are still no common data and software management practices across the researcher community that support data and software preservation past the end of the research project. Data and software need the same level of rigor and documentation that scientists practice on the research itself.
This session will identify the existing best practices, the value of and challenges to their adoption across a broad range of disciplinary cultures, and opportunities for awareness

2) 1N050: Quality and Trustworthiness of Earth Science Data
Session Description:
Earth science data quality and trustworthiness remain a big challenge with the growing diversity of datasets, the expanding needs of the scientific community, and scrutiny by public decision/policy-makers. Comprehensive, standardized, and accessible quality information, e.g. uncertainty, lineage and provenance, and complete and contemporaneous metadata/documentation is key for the trustworthiness of Earth science data. Researchers and public users need to efficiently find, access, and evaluate the quality level of Earth science data against their needs. Papers in this session cover topics on quality and trustworthiness of Earth science data, including: best practices for improving the capturing, describing, availability, and usage of Earth science data quality; assessment, characterization, and expression of data uncertainty, accuracy and precision; quality indicators for users to intuitively judge data quality; applications that manage and leverage quality information to improve user experience on data discovery and assist users to evaluate the fitness-for-use of Earth science data.

3) IN051: Quality Control and Provenance of Scientific Data: Data Producers and Consumer perspectives.
Session Description:
Model Development, data analysis and end-user applications of scientific data are becoming increasingly popular and challenging. Although they may operate differently, they still share an important challenge: understanding the quality of the data being used. Thus, credibility becomes an important prerequisite for all stages of the data lifecycle, from observations used by models, to outputs generated by models, and finally the consumer applications that use the data. When integrating data from many sources, it is paramount that the Data Provenance is well understood, and this is a challenge faced across all data communities. From the use of metadata database engines to visualization techniques, researchers continue to look for techniques to best certify and document their data. The Jupyter notebook is one such example, but many others exist.
In this session, we invite presentations on value-added approaches to quality controlling scientific data effectively. Open-source technologies are particularly welcome.
