Betreff: [rda-legalinterop-ig] [rda-legalinterop-ig] legal requirements concerning ownership of open science infrastructures
    Dear All,
During our last conference call I promised to write a few sentences about what I have in mind when I talk about possible requirements of infrastructures in order to qualify as open science infrastructures.
The basic thinking behind this is, that I would like to see as much research publications and research data freely available – permanently.
Our principles focus on research data, not on the infrastructures which are holding them.
There is one “in-between”: database protection.
I would like to add a focus on requirements concerning the ownership / legal structure / corresponding legal guaranties that are to ensure long term availability of the content.
For illustration I add 2 links
    https://blogs.ch.cam.ac.uk/pmr/2015/04/23/is-figshare-open-it-is-not-jus
    https://vre.leidenuniv.nl/vre/lrd/Pages/information-sheet.aspx?item=56
The first is a blog post by Peter Murray-Rust on “Is figshare open?”
The second is an information sheet of University of Leiden on Figshare
Figshare is only an example. I do not mean to pick on this endeavour.
According to my understanding the take home messages / questions concerning figshare are:
    Its ownership is somewhat blurry.
This could be considered to be not a big deal as all data in Figshare can be downloaded.
Is this a realistic perspective or are we stuck with an infrastructure like this once it reaches a certain size?
With what definitions of open science / open science infrastructures are endeavours like Figshare compatible?
    Regards,
    Christoph
