Dear Members,

RDA continues to be a growing, vibrant, and productive community. (See the latest Member and WG statisitics

Here is a brief summary of the activities and plans of the various groups coordinating RDA activities. We will present this and further updates at the “Business Meeting” during the plenary on Wednesday at 15:15. Where we will welcome questions and comments. We also invite you to comment directly on the document in the comments section below.

Secretariat

Major Activities in the Last Six Months

  • Finalized and published WG, IG, and output review processes.
  • Helped publish the first outputs of RDA.
  • Facilitated TAB, OAB, Council, WG, and IG operations. 
  • Established a bank account and began formally signing up Organisational Members.
  • P5 planning.
  • Established Plenary Guidelines and Logo and Endoresment Guidelines.
  • Ongoing Web and news updates.
  • Broad public engagement in the US, Europe, and Australia
  • WG/IG group facilitation
  • Developed international business plan.

Plans for the Coming 6-12 Months

  • Routinizing processes and operations, incl. sound and audit-able business practices.
  • Conducting training and outreach sessions on RDA outputs.
  • Development of a full Communications plan and a web-site refresh, improving navigation and usability.
  • Planning for P6 and beyond.
  • Continued Group facilitation.
  • Continued external relations with an emphasis on adoption and increased engagement in Japan, Africa, and Brazil.
  • Continued business planning and budgeting.

 

Council

Major Activities in the Last Six Months

  • The Funders appointed the final members of Council, Satoshi Sekiguchi, Deputy Director General, Directorate for Information Technology and Electronics, AIST and Michael Stanton, Director of Research and Development at the Brazilian NREN (RNP).
  • Engaging stakeholders in different countries research agencies and foundations on the support and sustainability of RDA.
  • Building strategic connections with national and regional academies and international organisations.
  • Developing with the OA an industry engagement strategy and associated financial support.
  • Developing strategic planning processes for RDA in collaboration with TAB and OAB, including seveal meeting scheduled around P4 and P5.
  • Oversight of business operations.

Plans for the Coming 6-12 Months

  • Strategic planning according to the process developed at a strategic planning consultation just prior to P5.
  • Broadening engagement with nations, funding agencies, and foundations to ensure RDA viability.
  • Increasing industry engagement.
  • Determining and implementing processes for Council member rotation.

Technical Advisory Board 

Major Activities in the Last Six Months

  • Focussed liaison and general engagement with WG/IGs and helping coordinate cross-group activity.
  • Coordinated breakout program at P4 and P5.
  • Reviewed and advised on myriad WG Case Statements and IG Charters.
  • Developed initial "clustering and tagging" approach to organizing WGs and IGs. See the full description of Thematic Area Clusters.
  • Effectively integrated new TAB members into a smoothly functioning team.

Plans for the Coming 6-12 Months

  • Reviewing and promoting adoption of inital RDA Recommendations.
  • Refining the definition of RDA outputs.
  • Facilitating cross-WG/IG collaboration.
  • Liaising with, and tracking progress of, groups and their outputs.
  • Regular election of four TAB members at P6.

Organisational Advisory Board 

Major Activities in the Last Six Months

  • Finalized and formalized Organisational Membership, with first members joining 1 Jan. 2015.
  • Formal establishment of the Organisational Advisory Board as a committee of the whole Organisational Assembley until the time there are 36 Organisational Members and Affiliates; after whcih a twelve member OAB will be elected at the next Plenary.
  • Conducted survey of current Members and Affiliates on their types of interests and needs with emphasis on adoption of RDA outputs. See the survey summary, and the original survey.
  • Developing Org. Member outreach strategy.
  • Participation in P5 "Adoption Day" events"

Plans for the Coming 6-12 Months

  • Increasing enagement with WGs to both guide and use their deliverables.
  • Ongoing Organisational member engagement.
  • Collaboration with Council on private sector engagement.
  • Advising on Business processes.
  • Election of 12-person OAB at P6 or P7.
