As part of this year’s Open Access Week, several Norwegian academic libraries, together with RDA (Research Data Alliance) Norway and ELIXIR Norway, present a series of events with topics related to open publishing, open science and data sharing. All events are digital and are open to anyone interested.

10.00-11.30: Open Science is the new normal
Open science has in a short time gone from being a topic for idealists, becoming what is expected of today’s researchers; it has become “the new normal”.
The Research Council of Norway and Horizon Europe are leading the way in this development, by expressing clear expectations and requiring that all aspects of the research they are funding should be as open as possible. These two organizations/programmes are important sources of funding for Norwegian researchers. In this event, representatives from both the Research Council and Horizon Europe will present the Open science requirements that researchers have to comply with and how to meet them.

10.00-11.30: Lisenser for deling av forskningsdata
Hvordan dele forskningsdata?
Utvalget leverer snart sin endelige rapport (utkast her).

10.00-11.00: Get your ducks in a row – steps for sharing of sensitive data (including human genetic data)
What are the different steps you have to consider if you plan to share sensitive data (including human genetic data)?
Funders, publishers and institutions are encouraging the archiving and sharing of research data. In case of quantitative data related to identifiable genetic information or health of persons, this is affected by various ethical and legal aspects including the GDPR. Most often the best and only option to share this kind of data is through controlled access repositories. This event provides an overview of the necessary steps and involved parties to consider to enable sharing of this category of data and point to knowledge resources for further information.

10.00-11.30: How to share qualitative data: videos and interviews
Researchers, who are encouraged to share their data openly, often face challenges when the data contains non-anonymized personal information. The topic for this event will be how to navigate the landscape of Open Data and GDPR based on experiences from researchers and NSD (Norwegian centre for research data).
In The ethics and responsibility of creating an open-access, multimedia language corpus, Lindsay Ferrara will consider some issues in creating an open-access linguistic corpus composed of multimedia video files. Specifically, she will discuss how researchers can ethically collect and archive personal data, share it with academic and other stakeholders, while maintaining integrity and respect for language users.
In the Challenges and opportunities with sharing pseudonymized interview data, Live Håndlykken Kvale will talk about how in her PhD project on research data sharing, the sharing of the collected interview data became a practical challenge in itself. She will present her reflections on balancing participants’ right to privacy and the goals of open science and research transparency through open data sharing.
In How can you increase the FAIRness of your qualitative data? Katrine Utaaker Segadal will give a general overview of opportunities and limitations when sharing qualitative data. Subjects she will touch upon are data management planning, documentation and contextualization, anonymization, informed consent and access control.

10.00-11.30: Diamonds are forever. On the benefits and challenges of Diamond Open Access publishing. With Per Pippin Aspaas, Jeroen M. Bosman & Bianca Kramer.
What is the way forward for institutional journal publishing, in Norway and internationally? Will it still be possible to run scientific journals at a high level without APCs (Article Processing Charges), and can such journals be serious contenders to commercial open access journals?
