    Dear FDI WG Members,
After a succeful hackathon in Crete, jointly organized with the EU H2020 BlueBRIDGE project, we would like to continue with the FDI-WG activities. https://www.rd-alliance.org/rda-europe-bluebridge-datathon-fisheries-and…
We will organize an open conference (using google hangout) this Friday 07 July 2017 at 16:00 CEST (Rome).
    1. Participation to the 10th RDA plenary in Montreal; https://www.rd-alliance.org/plenaries/rda-tenth-plenary-meeting-montreal… will not be a FDI WG event, but we need to plan who will represent us at other WG Meetings and other sessions.
    2. Progress of TG of Coordinating Working Parties (CWP) for fisheries statistics on Statistical Data Harmonization; Aymen Charef will report on recent meetings (CWP and FiRMS), and how the outcomes of those meetings will be used in this WG. (Annex 1 below). Emmanuek Blondel will highlight CWP recommendations in the geospatial domain.
    3. Progress on standardization of (meta)data formats and access protocols for geospatial explicit fisheries data:

Main goals: improve data sharing for fisheries datasets: gridded datasets, stock assessment outputs, acoustic datasets,
OGC metadata: examples of ongoing metadata for datasets (Tuna Atlas use case),
Data formats: CSV and NetCDF outputs (Tuna Atlas use case),
Access Protocols: examples of WMS/WFS/WCS/OPeNDAP (Tuna Atlas use case).
Next steps and plans for the next plenary.

    4. Quick feedback from the datathon team.

    News on the datathon: http://www.bluebridge-vres.eu/news/rda-europe-bluebridge-datathon-fisher
And the winner is ….. http://www.bluebridge-vres.eu/datathon-winners

Let us know if you wish to join the teleconference, so we can add you to the list of participants.
    Regards,
Anton Ellenbroek, Aymen Charef, Julien Barde

Annex 1: Statistial data harmonization and interoperability needs we want to achieve in the context of this RDA WG:
    1. Scope and objectives
The overall aim is to present a set of concepts and a structure of datasets that accommodate the codes used across Regional Fisheries Bodies (RFBs) to improve the data reporting and interoperability between national, regional and global organizations. Improving this exchange and minimising the time and costs for data mapping would provide an important service to any user of the data across fisheries data sources.
    2. Harmonization of data structure for fisheries capture statistics:
*Building a global Standard for Data Structure Definition that covers minimum capture data requirements for collection and dissemination.
*CWP standard classifications and international classifications are recommended to be used and efforts are required by RFBs’ to map them with their internal codelists.
*Modularity of the global SDSD provides flexibility allowing to take into account additional dimensions required to meet different scopes and local needs of the data collection and dissemination.
*Data collection: e.g logbooks scientific observers, catch and effort, nominal catch
*Data dissemination: e.g capture DSDs of FAO, SEIF (SDMX for Eurostat, ICES and FAO)

Registry: a unified collaborative registry to host the catalogue of the global SDSD’s and related metadata. A centralized dissemination repository would host the information made available.
Exchange format: csv, xml, sdmx: Some criteria need to be considered to choose/score the file format: Data needs to be readable for human and machine, complexity should be reduced.
Governance and maintenance: The role of maintaining the individual classifications in the repository and as well as the mapping among codelist codes should reside at the level of each contributior. In the case of any change in the mapping codelists, copies should be made available to the repository for broader dissemination.

    3. Among next actions depending on the feedback of this RDA WG: Exploration and implementation of the catalogue and repository options for codelists and related mappings (e.g within BlueBRIDGE and FAO MDM registry and catalogue); Also Exploration of the structure’s modularity of the exchange format to cater needs of RFB’s data interoperability.
