EGU Session on Integrating data and services in the solid Earth Sciences

06 Apr 2018

Dear all
For those of you that are in the RDA Earth, Space and Environment Interest Group that maybe going to EGU in Vienna, I thought I would draw your attention to this session on “Integrating data and services in solid Earth sciences” convened by Massimo Cocco, Carmela Freda, Florian Haslinger and Helen Glaves
There is a smorgasbord of groups presenting in both the oral and the poster sessions.
The Orals are on Thursday, 12 Apr, 08:30–12:00 in Room M2 and the Posters are on Wednesday 11 Apr, 15:30–17:00 in Hall X3: Poster numbers X3.59 to X3.81.
These are the session details:
The goal of this session is to discuss the integration of existing community-specific data infrastructures and data services into a multidisciplinary platform in the domain of solid Earth sciences to be accessible to a wide range of users and stakeholders. The session is promoted by the European Plate Observing System (EPOS, www.epos-eu.org) to discuss its data and service provision as well as its implementation toward novel integrated services for solid Earth science. We also look for contributions from scientists, research infrastructures, e-Infrastructure providers, ICT experts, managers, and communicators involved in activities for implementing data and service provision of relevance for solid Earth science. The objective is to share strategies and visions to tackle technological and scientific challenges. The session also aims at emphasizing the importance of global data infrastructures in solid Earth sciences; therefore, contributions from key international initiatives are welcome.
We encourage the presentation of plans and initiatives addressing the various elements of data and service integration, including metadata standards for interoperation dedicated to create integrated thematic and multidisciplinary services for users. Discussion on the relationship with large-scale e-infrastructures is also encouraged. Particular attention is given to the efforts needed to provide access for stakeholders not belonging to the scientific community as well as to disseminating data products of relevance for the societal challenges like geo-hazards and geo-resources. We plan to promote a stimulating discussion and a debate on the challenge of creating federated data services within and across the communities belonging to solid Earth sciences.
Take care
Lesley
