Dear members of and other people interested in the GODAN Soil Data WG,
Please find an update of the activities of and linked to the WG below. We look forward to your input!
Past meetings:
IGAD-RDA in March in Berlin. Carsten Hoffmann of the BonaRes data centre and colleagues, Aislinn Pearson of iSDA and others were present at IGAD-RDA. There was not be a separate session on soil data at IGAD this time.
Upcoming meetings:
- IUSS World Congress of Soil Science in Rio de Janeiro, 12-18 August 2018, interdivisional session of the IUSS WG SIS: session 1.2 Soil data and information for smarter land management:
1.2 - Soil data and information for smarter land management
Conveners: Peter Wilson (CSIRO/AU) and Noel Schoknecht (SSA/AU)
a) Soil Information: A global treasure for delivering food production and agricultural sustainability impact.
Simon Cook (Curtin University/AU)
b) Soil data exchange standards, development and implementation perspectives from the Oceania regional soil partnership.

- Also other sessions of interest in Rio are the joint session of GlobalSoilMap, Remote Sensing Applied to Soil Science, Pedometrics and Digital Soil Mapping sessions.
- The next OGC TC meeting is in September in Stuttgart Germany. Please indicate if you are planning to go, then we can indicate to the organizers that we need a timeslot in the Agriculture DWG.
- IGAD-RDA is starting to organize a meeting at RDA in Gaborone (Botswana) in November 2018. Please indicate if you are planning to go, then we can indicate to the organizers that we need a timeslot.
If you have suggestions for other meetings we should attend or are useful as meeting place, please let us know. We are working on ideas for a conference and workshop in the autumn of 2018. This is still in a preliminary stage and as soon as we know more, we will inform you.
GSP Plenary and Technical evaluation study
The progress in the Pillar 5 working group, the Pillar 4 working group and the Soil Data Facility of the GSP have been presented and discussed at the GSP Plenary meetingin Rome, 11-13 June 2018 by resp. Rainer Baritz, Neil McKenzie and Rik van den Bosch. The presentations of Rainer and Rik are attached. The Terms of Reference or concept note for the technical evaluation of the current soil data exchange models was presented by Rainer and has been approved by the Plenary and the Secretariat. The GSP secretariat will announce the call soon. We hope this study can be executed in the scope of a few months so the results can be discussed at the INSII meeting in October. When the call is awarded we will let you know in a mailing who will be conducting the work. We would like to ask you for your cooperation in this study, so we can achieve a useful and supported result.
Please find general information on the GODAN Soil WG website. If you have contributions such as relevant use cases or cases that highlight the need for soil data interoperability please let us know.
Best regards,
