An: 'RDA/CODATA Legal Interoperability IG'
Betreff: [rda-legalinterop-ig] [rda-legalinterop-ig] legal requirements concerning ownership of open science infrastructures
Dear All,
During our last conference call I promised to write a few sentences about what I have in mind when I talk about possible requirements of infrastructures in order to qualify as open science infrastructures.
The basic thinking behind this is, that I would like to see as much research publications and research data freely available - permanently.
Our principles focus on research data, not on the infrastructures which are holding them.
There is one “in-between”: database protection.
I would like to add a focus on requirements concerning the ownership / legal structure / corresponding legal guaranties that are to ensure long term availability of the content.
For illustration I add 2 links
https://blogs.ch.cam.ac.uk/pmr/2015/04/23/is-figshare-open-it-is-not-jus...
https://vre.leidenuniv.nl/vre/lrd/Pages/information-sheet.aspx?item=56
The first is a blog post by Peter Murray-Rust on “Is figshare open?”
The second is an information sheet of University of Leiden on Figshare
Figshare is only an example. I do not mean to pick on this endeavour.
According to my understanding the take home messages / questions concerning figshare are:
Its ownership is somewhat blurry.
This could be considered to be not a big deal as all data in Figshare can be downloaded.
Is this a realistic perspective or are we stuck with an infrastructure like this once it reaches a certain size?
With what definitions of open science / open science infrastructures are endeavours like Figshare compatible?
Regards,
Christoph

Dear Christoph:
The link for the telecon finally opened about 15-20 min late. Gail and I were the only ones on the line, so we talked about all kinds of interesting topics, but did not make practical progress on the IG stuff!
We are both concerned that the holidays might cause a loss of momentum that might be difficult to overcome. Do you, Enrique and Bob have any ideas about protecting against that risk?
Best regards, and merry Christmas to all.

Thanks, Christoph: I could participate on the 6th, but after that I am unavailable on Fridays, until the end of March, because of teaching conflict.
Perhaps someone should create a doodle poll.

Dear all,
Apologies from myself and from Asha for the problem with this call. Asha was supposed to have initiated the call but had a problem with the diary entry and so missed it.
I’m sorry for the inconvenience and the loss of time.
I think it would be best to resume the calls in the new year. I will personally not be available on 6th or 13th, but there is no reason why the call could not resume on either of those dates.
Asha: please could you send round a doodle for participants’ availability at 14.00 UTC on 6, 13, 20 and 27 January.
With very best wishes,
Simon.

Hi Bernard,
I didn't try to connect. Because I hadn't heard anything back after filling out the Doodle before Christmas. Sorry for you, because this was the last chance, for a long time, to have you on the call, as far as I understood.
Très bonne année (quand même)!

Hi all,
Yes, as Bob noted there was not sufficient participation to confirm the call - I had also let the co-chairs know that I was still on leave.
The calls should resume later in the month - I’m happy to help reschedule the calls for Monday if that is more practical.

Herbert
