P18: Your input is needed

14 Jul 2021
Groups audience:

 Hi VSSIG members,

Pleanary 18 is upcoming and we are curious to know "What are you struggling with while using semantic artefacts (ontologies, vocabularies thesauri etc.)"  in order tailor the session to your needs.

Please answer using the comments below by the 26th of July.

Many thanks in advance,

Major obstacles using semantic artefacts (ontologies, vocabularies thesauri etc.) include:

    • Lack of availability of the vocabularies in a machine-readable format
    • Diversity of data formats (multiple RDF serializations and languages, CSV, XML, JSON...)
    • License issues (unknown license or no open license to reuse the vocabulare)
    • Lack of documentation about the vocabularies

    • Smooth integration of human and machine readable "view".
    • Resolvability of IDs
    • Modularization
    • Aligning information models and ontologies
    • Isosemantic expressions
    • multiple identifiers for instances (may be out of scope)
    • lack of support for schemas, e.g., ShEx

Vocabularies are a "search device": they organize information for some
specific users' needs (are you a statistician working for Health
planning or a surgeon searching for similar articles on topics related
to surgery procedures ? Are you a member of the European Parliament
working on transport regulation or an Eurocontrol Engineer working on
specific air control problems ? etc. etc.)
Real re-use of vocabularies is much more problematic than expected (most
    of the times).
Alignment of different of vocabularies is often flawed for the same reason.
We therefore needs dynamic ways to compare and relate vocabularies to
create and MAINTAIN new ones. We do not need so many kind of logic
relations apart from conceptual heritage hierarchies and (annotated)
matching relations. But we need very visual tools to keep different
    vocabularies in parallel and synchronized.
Hoping those very general thoughts (born from many failures to have end
users really involved in information bases) can help,
    Christophe

    * Lack of version ID & control (or lack of harmonized approach)
    * Persistency, stability & maintenance issues
    * Lack of governance (related to previous point)
    * Authority control mechanisms are missing
    * Skills gap for working with LOD & semantic technologies
    * Lack of documentation. Poor or missing definition of concepts.
    * Poor understanding of the ethics of classification (risks regarding machine-learning & AI)
