RDA Strategic Planning

09 Jan 2015
Groups audience:

I apologize if you get this message twice.  I posted it then it seemed to disappear.  I am trying again.

RDA Council is holding a strategic planning session to look at the life of the organization on Saturday March 7th in San Diego before Adoption Day on the 8th and the beginning of Plenary 5 on the 9th.  Council has invited the two OAB co-Chairs as well as two additional members of the OAB.  If you are interested in representing the OAB at this planning session, please signal your interest by emailing me at ws@walterstewartassociates.com by noon UTC on Wednesday, January 14th.  I will place the names of all interested in a hat and draw two.

Please note that this is an all day meeting which will require arrival in San Diego the previous night, Friday, March 6th.

Speaking of Plenary 5, please think of ideas for the Organisational Assembly of RDA meeting at Plenary 5 on Monday the 9th.  We will talk about the agenda at our January call on the 22nd.

Happy New Year to you all,

Walter

Hi Walter, unfortunately I will only get there on the 7th end of the day and cannot volunteer for this. However I do believe that it is by now time to review the overall governance and have a critical maturity review of the entire organisation. RDA has been around for more than two years and at least in Europe received the approval of the major funding agencies including the very recent approval of RDA-EU 3rd phase with a considerable European Commission financial support. We cannot therefore just continue with a mix of a bottom up and top organisation, governing bodies essentially formed by self-appointed volunteers, and a large number of bodies with often not well defined and overlapping responsibilities and terms of reference.
The Organisational Advisory Board, where I sit as representative of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, the first organisation to apply to the iOAB, is, as the name suggests, a representative body, not an individual volunteer entity. It should therefore express the opinion of the represented organisations and be directly involved in the above mentioned maturity review of the overall RDA governance. I would appreciate if we could have a point in the agenda of the next conf call to get a sense if what I am saying is somehow shared by other members in the OAB.
Many thanks in advance and Happy New Year,
    Fab

Fab, we will certainly be able to discuss this issue on Thursday. But I remind you that the gathering on the 7th of March is not to develop the strategy. The gathering is a sample of people from across the organization to work with council to develop a framework for discussion that can engage the entire organization in a strategic planning process. Council discussed the process and decided to broaden the group with whom it designs the process. In that eventual process there will be ample opportunity for the OAB to speak as a body as well as those of us who are individual members as well as representatives of our organization to speak as individuals.

    Fab,
I have added an item for this discussion to Thursday’s agenda - to discuss OAB’s ideas for the strategy planning meeting
    Best regards,
    Juan.

Thanks for the quick answer and additional clarificatios. Good therefore to start a discussion on this in the OAB in view of the imminent opportunity to provide our input as part of the general process being put in place.
    Cheers,

Fab, we will certainly be able to discuss this issue on Thursday. But I remind you that the gathering on the 7th of March is not to develop the strategy. The gathering is a sample of people from across the organization to work with council to develop a framework for discussion that can engage the entire organization in a strategic planning process. Council discussed the process and decided to broaden the group with whom it designs the process. In that eventual process there will be ample opportunity for the OAB to speak as a body as well as those of us who are individual members as well as representatives of our organization to speak as individuals.
    Talk to you on Thursday,

Hi Walter, unfortunately I will only get there on the 7th end of the day and cannot volunteer for this. However I do believe that it is by now time to review the overall governance and have a critical maturity review of the entire organisation. RDA has been around for more than two years and at least in Europe received the approval of the major funding agencies including the very recent approval of RDA-EU 3rd phase with a considerable European Commission financial support. We cannot therefore just continue with a m ix of a bottom up and top organisation, governing bodies essentially formed by self-appointed volunteers, and a large number of bodies with often not well defined and overlapping responsibilities and terms of reference.
Many thanks in advance and Happy New Year,
    Fab

I apologize if you get this message twice. I posted it then it seemed to disappear. I am trying again.
RDA Council is holding a strategic planning session to look at the life of the organization on Saturday March 7th in San Diego before Adoption Day on the 8th and the beginning of Plenary 5 on the 9th. Council has invited the two OAB co-Chairs as well as two additional members of the OAB. If you are interested in representing the OAB at this planning session, please signal your interest by emailing me at ***@***.*** by noon UTC on Wednesday, January 14th.
Happy New Year to you all,
    Walter
