Dear all,
We have had a very successful Working Group workshop in London July 1/2 hosted by the British Library, organized by the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), the British Library (BL) and the RDA-WG-DC.
The primary goal of the workshop was to explore a proposed citation model against a number of research community use cases. The participants mainly represented the UK Natural Environment Research Council data centres, the UK Data Archive of the Economic and Social Research Council, the British Library and DataCite. Through a number of facilitated sessions, the participants explored the issues around the proposed model and possible improvements or adaptations for their own user communities. A number of currently used pragmatic solutions were presented and explored. Finally, possible steps forward were proposed for a few of the use cases presented that most addressed the issues and range of use cases presented.
A report on the workshop and its results has been prepared by John Watkins. It is now available, attached to this email and also available in the RDA Filedepot of our WG at the following URL:
https://rd-alliance.org/filedepot_download/384/379
Thanks a lot to everybody involved in preparing and running the workshop, and for the phantastic discussion, and specifically to John for preparing the report. We will be discussing the findings also during the upcoming meeting at the 4th plenary.
best regards, Andreas

Thank you Andi, John, et al.!
It seems like it was a really productive workshop. I haven’t yet read the report in depth, but I like how you examined different perspectives and went deep with a few case studies.
Do you think it is reasonable to think that one or two of the organizations in the case studies will adopt the final model produced by the WG? RDA is all about adoption ya know ;-).
Thanks again, especially to any financial sponsors of the workshop. Keep up the good work!
cheers,
-m.

Hi Mark
Within the UK NERC data centres, we are actively looking at how to deal with dynamic data citation issues and it was very valuable to be able to compare current individual approaches to generic approach proposed by the WG and work it from different angles. For SeaDataNet and the UK National River Flow Archive, there are pressing requirements for citation facilities so I think there will be systems implemented soon. In reality these may not be full 'adoption' of the model proposed as the data centres are not at a level of capability to do this (e.g. issuing citation on user data request - especially for DataCite DOIs). However, I think there was a recognition and a desire expressed at the workshop that the data providers wanted to take implementation steps to move in this direction. Not sure how far we will have got by end of September by we'll try!!
I think the Louise Corti from UK Data Achive showed some good systems for implementing this model with qualitative data that could provide a clear route forward for those dealing with these data.
A lesson to learn from this workshop is that they are valuable to look a approaches proposed, how they fit with the requirements / capability of different protagonists and what practical steps can be identified / committed to. To do this in one meeting does require workshop structuring and use of facilitation techniques (not just break-outs!) though well worth the effort!
Regards
John

Mark,
also don’t forget the Data Citation WG which is also focussed on this kind of data and its issues.

That would be great. We had the feeling that such focused meetings,
discussing a number of selected sue cases, was very helpful in verifying
the aproach, identifying potential limitations, etc.
It was very productive to work on specific data sets and scenarios.
If anybody from a US group (or any other region, as a matter of fact)
needs some help, please let us know.

Also Ray Idaszak from RENCI its organizing a data citation workshop from
the recent NSF call in the US. This report looks like a great input for
that activity.

great to hear!
The other document that might be helpful is the position paper,
available on the RDA Wiki at
https://rd-alliance.org/group/data-citation-wg/wiki/scalable-dynamic-dat...
I guess, with more workshops like these, and more case studies starting,
would it be helpful to add some wiki space for each of these?
let me know if we should set up anything in that direction.

Its a very successful Working Group. I'll read it deeply. I am Qubaoqiang in Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China (ISTIC) ,we are writing a national standand about data citation,so I am very happy to comminuicate with the experts here and discuss the question of data citation model, style, format etc.
By the way, Here is a notice. The 9th International Conference on the Cooperation and Promotion of Information Resources in Science and Technology (COINFO 2014) is organized by the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China (ISTIC) in collaboration with Suzhou Science and Technology Bureau (China),Wuhan University (China) and University of Southern Queensland (Australia). The Conference will be held in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province of China from 26 to 27 October 2014.On COINFO 2014, Data Sharing and Management is one of key topics. wellcome the experts major in data citation or data sharing attend the conference and give a keynote speech about research data publishing and sharing, we will be very honored and appreciated. If you have further inquires, please do not hesitate to tell me(Email: qubq@istic.ac.cn; huaziqu@126.com), it's my honor to provide convenience to you as possible. You may also access the conference website http://coinfo.istic.ac.cn for more information.
