Potential joint session for P10

19 Jun 2017

Dear Chairs of the BioSharing WG,
Following up on the Call for Sessions for the upcoming RDA P10
(https://www.rd-alliance.org/rda-10th-plenary-call-sessions), I would like
to initiate a discussion regarding a potential Joint Session between the
BioSharing WG and the Data Discovery Paradigms IG (DDPIG -
https://www.rd-alliance.org/groups/data-discovery-paradigms-ig).
Within the overall context of the FAIR ("Findable, Accessible, Interpretable
and Reusable") Principle in Research Data , DDPIG focuses in particular on
the "Findable" aspect of Research Data, providing a forum where
representatives from across the spectrum of stakeholders and roles
pertaining to data search can discuss issues related to improving data
discovery. There are several Task Forces in place under the umbrella
organization of DDPIG; "Relevancy Ranking", "Use Cases, Prototyping Tools
and Test Collections" and "Best Practices for Making Data Findable" have
been up and running for the past six months, whereas "Metadata Enrichment"
and "Cataloging Common API's for Data Query" have just been launched.
Given that one of the recent outcomes (and a key concern) of the BioSharing
WG is the set of recommendations to guide users and producers of databases
and content standards to select and describe them, or recommend them in data
policies, we believe that a joint session between the two groups may provide
further insights into the general practices of data discoverability in Life
Sciences, as well as identify cross-disciplinary applications for the
existing recommendations.
Just as a gentle reminder, the deadline for submissions is this Friday June
23rd.
Kind regards,
Fotis E. Psomopoulos
(also on behalf of the DDPIG co-chairs)

    I agree.
Also - in case you think it might be of interest - I spoke with 2 other NIH folks last week (Dina Paltoo and JP Kim) who lead the NIH Data Sharing Policy Working Group - and they are very interested in participating in the next plenary, especially with an opportunity to share the NIH data sharing updates and the concepts of key elements in a data management and sharing plan.
I mention this in case you think it might be relevant. If so - I would be happy to introduce them (to any of you who do not know them already).

Also of interest (if you all haven’t already looked at it) is the federal reporter – built on NIH reporter, but adds other agency data.
    And has an API!

I’ve been exchanging emails with Amir Aryani of the Australian National Data Service who is one of the chairs of the Data Description Registry Interoperability (DDRI) Working Group. Amir is interested in what data is available on NIH grants. I’ve recently pointed him to the publically available file from NIH Exporter and they are planning on working with those over the summer. I’m waiting to hear back if they are likely to have anything to show in September.
The application they have produced id the Research Data Switchboard
