I've had some interesting engagements with one of our campus affiliated research institutes, and their use SaaS applications has come up in some of those conversations. This article from last Spring's IJDC I found relevant and helpful - particularly for its focus on small and medium-sized labs:

Our Libraries' is in a very experimental place right now when it comes to use of cloud computing resources, and as our resident data librarian I have taken it upon myself to get much more fluent advising on appropriate use of these types resources.
