Dear VRE IG members The draft case statement for the VRE IG has been posted on the RDA portal https://www.rd-alliance.org/group/virtual-research-environment-ig-vre-ig... and is also attached to this e-mail. This document will be discussed during the VRE IG session at the forthcoming 9th RDA Plenary in Barcelona with the intention of finalising the case statement in readiness for submission to the RDA Secretariat for the endorsement of this group. I invite you to review this document in advance of the VRE IG meeting and either provide comments (especially those who will not be in Barcelona) or be prepared to comment during the relevant agenda item. Kind regards Helen

Hi Helen and Keith,
I won’t be able to make it to Barcelona and it is difficult to regularly attend the RDA meetings. I believe Jarek Nabrzyski will be able to attend Barcelona to represent science gateways, and of course Sandra Gesing is the US co-chair to the proposed IG (and is heavily involved in our new Science Gateways Community Institute). We are interested in watching the progress of the development of specifications. One way we have seen interoperability across gateways is through the use of APIs. This has been quite successful for many gateways.

Nancy –
Many thanks for this. I hope Jarek (and Sandra) can participate actively in the discussions.
The use of APIs is indeed a good mechanism, especially linked with web services. The problems I have observed are the number of parameters required to be passed across the API, especially if trying to ensure trust/security/privacy and performance aspects.
Best

Microservices style i.e., small, independently deployable perfectly formed services that do only one single (small) functional thing can help mitigate that problem.
Taking an ‘engineering view’ of them towards provides us with a technology-independent specification of what those APIs and services are while taking a ‘technology view’ tells us to implement them as RESTful or some such. I think it’s important to maintain the separation and independence between those two views, and to try initially to define such APIs logically only.
Kind regards
