Council is obtaining an independent technical review of this Working Group. Below is the letter the Council sent the group chairs prior to the Launch.

The group has refined their case statement and had active and fruitful discussions in Göteborg. They are proceeding to work on the deliverables outlined in the case statement.

Letter from Council:
Dear Gerhard, Peter and Gary,

In the last few weeks the RDA Council received an initial group of Case Statements for assessment and we are writing to you to provide a response to your submission. We very much appreciate your discussions which have been, and continue to be, an important part of establishing and building the RDA as an organization that can have substantial impact and effectiveness within the data community.

The process for assessing the Case Statements was as follows:  The Liaisons for each of the submitting groups were asked to provide a technical assessment of the Case Statement.  Council used these assessments in a substantial way to assess the potential impact of the effort.  Council closely read the Case Statement as well as RDA Forum discussions for the group in order to get a sense of the discussion and participation.  (We were also aware that at this point, part of the discussion for some groups were not conducted on the RDA Forum).  Council’s assessment of the impact and alignment with the RDA mission included a strong focus on whether the Case Statement included concrete deliverables that would directly or indirectly enable a research community of practice and would be adopted by Working Group members during the effort.

For this Case Statement, Council wanted to avoid a potential conflict of interest and factor in additional expertise, therefore Council will solicit independent technical advice before assessing the Case Statement.

If it is useful, we would like to meet the chairs of your group to discuss this decision with you, and hope to do so during the Plenary meeting in Gothenburg next week. Ross Wilkinson (ross.wilkinson@ands.org.au) and Fran Berman (bermaf@rpi.edu) will be available on Sunday to answer any questions or discuss if you are arriving early, and otherwise all of us (including John Wood [john.wood@acu.ac.uk]) will work with you to find a time during the three days to meet with you.

We appreciate your group’s discussion and engagement with the RDA and look forward to seeing you in Gothenburg.

Ross, Fran, and John

Thanks Yin Chen.
Please use the forum in the discussion areas to interact within the group.
This forum should be reserved to interact with the bodies of RDA - council, TAB etc.

So I will respond to your note in the discussion forum part.

Peter

Dear Peter and Gary

We would like to contribute to this working group with the work we've done in ENVRI, which we consider is highly relevant. The attachment includes some comments from ENVRI.

The ongoing work in ENVRI is to develop a Reference Model, a common ontological framework and standards for the description and characterisation of computational and storage infrastructures for environmental research. A Reference Model has been recognised as a very useful approach for standardisation. The ENVRI Reference Model is a common core conceptual model which captures computational requirements for data and operations that are common in the environmental research infrastructures, and provides a taxonomy of terms, concepts and definitions. The Reference Model is based on our investigation and analysis of the state-of-the-art design experiences of 6 EU ESFRI Environmental Research Infrastructures. We'd like to share our work and experiences, and hope can discuss with you in the upcoming RDA Gorthenburg meeting.

With best wishes

Yin Chen

Here is the updated Case Statement ready for being checked by the council.
I should also mention that the questions of the council are addressed by a special appendix which can be seen in the CWG forum. The answers have not been discussed broadly, so interested people may look into the forum. We do not expect many discussions about this, since it does not add substantial new things.
If the council has things that are not clear we would of course like to interact about this.

Hi all,

we recieved the data foundation and terminology case statement for community review.
Here it is:

The DFT WG will have a poster at the Monday night session.

Included in this is a summary of On-going activities

Although this is a relatively new and ambitious effort, progress has been achieved with a Case Statement. This was presented and discussed at the First RDA Plenary in Gothenburg where attendees agreed on the need for a common vocabulary. Based on this a revised Statement was submitted and accepted  In our early phase of work we are drawing from extant work and the models discussed at the First Plenary as well as through contact with relevant communities.  We have started on the research needed to integrate these and identify other contributing initiatives. Several models of Digital Objects have been sketched out including data organization models that represent concrete use cases.  These are either foundational models from operative systems or are being considering as the basis of data systems.  We are currently drafting a summary reference document with an accompanying abstract data organization model that conceptualizes these various models to help provide a basis for moving forward on unified conceptualization and terminology. In parallel with this we are developing an analysis document of the various DFT model together a workflow analysis and a model synthesis. We are preparing to brief these 4 aspects of work at the 2nd Plenary Session.

I have place a draft (V1) of the:
"Proposed Steps leading to 3rd RDA Plenary in Dublin on the RDA file system."
    See:
https://rd-alliance.org/filedepot in the Data Foundation and Terminology WG section.

Read the full details there and comment on these to help develop the plan.

The DFT’s working group production has now advanced to a stage that it would benefit by the organization and use of regularly scheduled (once a month) virtual/online conferences (VCs). This is particularly important to meet objectives set for the 3rd Plenary in Dublin (March 2014) and a proposed schedule is provided in the draft document.
