Lab Director: Hydrographic Data, Hydrographic Data Group at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO)
Stephen currently manages the Hydrographic Data Group at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), and has spent the majority the past four decades at SIO dealing with data associated numerous US and international marine observing systems. His primary interests relate to the design and operation of enterprise level information systems that deliver useful data from sensors in the field to the users in the lab. He is involved in the consolidation, curation and interoperability of in situ ocean observation data through his on-going participation in the data management teams for the Argo Observing Array and the OceanSITES project. He currently chairs the Data Management Subcommittee (DMSC) for the Southern Ocean Observing System and serves as co-PI on an EarthCube IA for Oceanographic Data. As a manager of an active and productive data team, he is very familiar with the challenges associated with helping established data systems evolve into a component of an interoperable global entity. His goal as a TAB member is to help ground the expectations of the RDA by balancing goals against the reality of our available resources.
