Sarah Jones, GÉANT

Sarah has worked in the field of Open Science and Research Data Management for the past decade. Previously she worked as Associate Director at the Digital Curation Centre, and in July 2020 began at GÉANT as EOSC Engagement Manager. She has been involved in several European Commission-funded projects such as EUDAT, OpenAIRE and FAIRsFAIR, worked on Expert Groups for FAIR data and a Transport Research Cloud, and was an independent expert on the EOSC Executive Board. For RDA she is Co-chair of two groups, the Active Data Management Plans Interest Group and the Global Open Research Commons Interest Group.

What is your history with the RDA and what impact has it had on you?

The Digital Curation Centre, where I used to work, was involved with RDA from the outset so it has always been a big part of my work. I’ve attended most of the plenaries and also have been involved in the RDA Europe project. On a personal level, RDA has had a huge impact on me. I’ve met so many fantastic international colleagues and been able to pursue collaborative work with them. The Data Science summer schools is something I’m particularly proud of and found incredibly rewarding. I thoroughly enjoy coming together with people from different backgrounds to reach consensus and find the RDA a really vibrant and useful forum for this.

What do you feel you bring to TAB and what is your experience so far in being a member?

I stood as a member of TAB as I’d like to give something back to RDA. It’s always difficult to run ground-up organisations effectively, as you need lots of people to volunteer their time and passion to drive things forward. I’ve benefitted so much that I’d like to commit that time to help administer the groups. Hopefully as TAB liaison I can offer some useful advice to IG/WG chairs. I’m also keen to help widen participation in RDA, making it more diverse and representative in terms of the global south, gender and career stage. So far the experience has been really positive. I’ve learned a lot from the more experienced members of TAB and enjoy our fortnightly calls.
