23 (research data) Things proving a big hit

23 (research data) Things – the self-directed learning programme launched in March by the Australian National Data Service (ANDS) – has proved a big hit with the research data community.

ANDS gave a presentation to the Research Data Alliance’s Libraries for Research Data (L4RD) Interest Group in Tokyo in March 2016, outlining the programme’s planned goals and activities.

Since then, hundreds of researchers, librarians, data managers and others have embarked on the ‘23T’ journey. Momentum has been kept up through the formation of forty-nine Community Groups, a MeetUp group and forum, a 23T newsletter and a regular webinar catch-up for participants. The #23RDThings Twitter feed has also become a lively forum for sharing ideas and resources.

The Australian program developed out of the excellent work done for 23 Things: Libraries for Research data by Michael Witt and the RDA.

Due to the program’s flexible and individual focus, it’s hard to put an exact number on how many people are currently on the ‘23T’ journey, but ANDS estimates over 1,200 people are now involved. Most of them are in Australia, but there is also a large and vibrant New Zealand 23T community, as well as others joining in from around the world. A group of US participants plan to launch their own 23 (research data) Things back home next year.

ANDS is available to speak to people who are interested in setting up a 23T community in their home country, providing advice about what has worked well for the Australian programme. If you want to find out more about getting a 23T programme started where you live, contact Karen Visser at karen.visser@ands.org.au.

Finally, it’s not too late to start 23 (research data) Things yourself! Individuals can start midway or go back to the start and catch up. Find out more and get involved at http://www.ands.org.au/partners-and-communities/ands-communities/23-research-data-things
